A bassoon crosses the picture from the upper left to the lower right, its wide bell open at the left and its curved crook and reed rising near the top. The body is wrapped in swirling vine patterns of plum, coral, gold and teal, with round green keys and blue rods running along its length. A scaffold supports the middle, and workers stand on a round platform beside the bell, while two musicians play inside it. Around it stretch wooden boardwalks over a pond full of red and green lily pads. Sheds on the right and the left are stacked with bundles of reeds in every colour, benches hold knives and half-finished reeds, and rowboats drift between the docks. Fish swim in long water troughs. Each shed, boardwalk and boat forms its own cluster, so the picture divides into clear areas.
