Caribbean Island Village by Shore

Pastel houses in coral, yellow, lilac and blue line a cobbled waterfront street, shutters open and terracotta roofs bright against forested hills. Racks of clothes, potted plants and painted signboards stand outside the doors, and people stroll the lane in summer colours. Palms rise between the roofs, and a green ridge climbs steeply behind the town. A wooden jetty runs out into turquoise shallows where three painted boats lie moored beside coiled rope, wicker baskets and a heaped fishing net; small fish flicker in the clear water. In the foreground a man in a straw hat tends a fruit stand of bananas, oranges, mangoes and pineapples, with hibiscus and bougainvillea crowding the corner. Water, stone and painted walls each hold a distinct block of colour.
