Carousel in the Toymaker Town

A grand carousel fills the middle of a town built from toys. Its striped canopy runs red, blue, gold, green and purple, trimmed with gold scrollwork and topped by a crown and a flag. A tiny village and a castle stand on the canopy rim. On the wooden platform, painted figures stand between brass poles: dappled horses, a white swan, a green dragon, a teal seahorse, two roosters, a tiger and a peacock. Little landscape panels circle the frieze, and mushrooms and blue flowers climb the poles. Around it stand toy blocks turned into houses, a spinning top, drums with triangle patterns, and small figures in workshops and stalls. The seven canopy stripes and the ring of animals give the picture an orderly rhythm.
