A huge cockerel stands among stone-walled fields, its red comb topped by a small bell tower and its tail a wide fan of green, blue and purple feathers. Its chest has little windows with people inside: a woman at a sill, a man mixing a bowl, a baker with a tray of loaves, and others behind glass. Two children run along its back with satchels, and a milk cart pulled by a horse climbs its side. Around it lie a red barn, haystacks, cottages with blue doors, rows of purple cabbages, apple trees, and ponds full of ducks and geese. A farmer scatters seed near its feet. The windows, ponds and barn give the pieces clear places to sit.
