A covered market hall runs back under timber arches and a domed skylight, hung with bunting, garlands and paper lanterns. Painted signboards name each stand along both galleries. Baskets of baguettes and round loaves fill the left foreground beside crates of apples, oranges, peppers and greens laid out in graded rows. A curved glass case holds pastries and wheels of cheese with a vendor smiling behind it, while jars of preserves and open bowls of coloured spice line the counters at the right beneath bunches of drying herbs. Shoppers move down the middle aisle with wicker baskets, a couple carrying bread toward the front, and a balcony of onlookers rings the upper floor. Produce sorted by colour makes each crate a small block of its own.
