Daily Life in a Wartime Shelter

Beneath layered pipes, a wartime shelter divides into small rooms, each covered in clashing patchwork quilts and checkered tile. In the dormitory at left, children curl under striped and floral blankets on tiered bunks while two bundled figures haul a carved wooden trunk past a cat chasing a spool of red thread. Red-and-white hazard tape marks off a damp corner where a pipe drips overhead. To the right, cooks stir bubbling pots of stew on a heavy stove while someone mops up a spill and a line of coat-wrapped people wait with tin mugs for their share. A storeroom below holds crates, folded fabric, and a shelf of gas masks, and in the infirmary a doctor in a white coat checks on a child tucked into bed. Every corner keeps its own pattern, so the shelter reads as a set of separate little rooms.
