Dining Carriage on a Mountain Line

A dining carriage stretches away under a barrel ceiling of carved wood and painted foliage, lit by rows of amber globe lamps and small shaded sconces. The nearest table is laid for tea: cream cloth, floral plates, teacups and saucers, glassware, a rose-painted pot, a jug of wildflowers and two printed menus beside a leather folder. Further tables carry more china and a small bud vase. Stained glass in pink and green tops the windows, where pine slopes, violet mountains and a hillside castle drift past at dusk. A passenger in a dark coat and flat cap reads alone, a satchel resting on the seat. Strapped cases and hatboxes fill the brass luggage racks; a trolley of cakes, tarts and trifles waits at left. Upholstery, carpet and ceiling each keep a separate pattern, so the receding aisle stays readable.
