Dining Room Beneath the Sea

A domed dining room sits inside an aquarium. Tall arched glass fills every wall and the ceiling, opening onto blue water where pink jellyfish trail their tentacles, a spotted ray glides past, a turtle swims among shoals of striped and yellow fish, and banks of coral in rose, orange and violet climb the sandy floor beyond. Tables dressed in pale blue and green cloths fill the room, laid with candles, glasses and folded napkins; diners in evening clothes talk over their plates while a waiter in a white apron carries a tray between them. A carved fountain with a seahorse plays at the centre of a mosaic floor, ringed by low balustrades, coral ornaments and potted palms. A brass chandelier hangs from the dome and sconces glow along the columns, with a mezzanine of guests looking down at the left. Warm lamplight against cold blue water splits the room cleanly in two.
