Fire Engine Camp on the Cobblestones

A red-and-teal fire engine fills the picture, parked on a patchwork of cobblestones beside a narrow canal. Its cab roof carries a small blue house with a bell where three firefighters pull a hose. Along the back, a cook stands at a table, a family eats under a lean-to and a lookout peers through a spyglass from a wooden tower, while washing hangs from a line. The open side compartments hold bunk beds, a workshop and a wardrobe of coats and boots, and an enormous hose reel is mounted at the rear. A ladder as long as the truck rests on the roof. Firefighters at floating pumps draw canal water, and thatched huts and flag poles dot the grass beyond. The big red cab and dark green body split the picture into two clear colour zones.
