Galley Kitchen Aboard a Train

A galley kitchen fills a railway carriage, its curved wooden ceiling hung with copper pans and drying herbs. A black iron range with a copper hood stands against the left wall beside shelves of labelled spice jars, oil bottles and stacked china. Knives and utensils hang in ranks along the panelling above a work counter where radishes, carrots, greens and a chopping board wait beside a mortar and pepper mill. The central block carries a basket of baguettes, round loaves, pastries, grapes, figs, apples and pomegranates, with cookery books stacked at the front. Sacks of flour and a pan of dough sit near the counter at the right. Two wide windows show green hills, a river and a curving rail line running away through the fields. Copper, timber and glass jars hold three separate rhythms.
