Heap of Painted Collector Thimbles

A tabletop's worth of collector thimbles lies tumbled together, filling the frame edge to edge with no space between them. Metal caps in gold, silver, brass, and copper mix with white and pastel ceramic ones, each turned at its own angle so rims and open mouths point every direction. Dotted knurling wraps the plain metal pieces, while the painted ones carry tiny scenes, from a red-and-white lighthouse to a three-masted ship at sea, a perched owl with round eyes, roses and poppies in full bloom, a spray of daisies, and a fluttering butterfly. Celtic knotwork bands circle a few of the silver ones. Nothing in the pile stays plain for long, since every second or third thimble breaks into its own miniature picture, giving the crowded heap dozens of small, separately recognizable landmarks.
