Bundles of lavender, chamomile and yellow blossoms hang drying from the beams of a low stone-walled herb shop, filling the ceiling with colour. Behind a long counter, shelves climb four rows deep with labelled bottles and jars — sage, thyme, valerian root, elixir of vitality — each catching a different tint of glass. A grey-haired woman in an orange dress and cream apron grinds leaves in a mortar, scattered stems around her. A wall of small drawers marked roots, seeds, leaves and bark fills the left side beside a botanical chart of medicinal plants. On the front table sit brass scales, painted mortars, a quill and inkpot, and an open herbal spread flat. A tabby cat sleeps on the floorboards. All that shelved glassware sorts itself by colour and row, giving the eye a hundred small footholds.
