Hourglass in the Clockwork Garden Works

A great hourglass tilts across the middle of the frame, held between dark posts with red knobs and mint-green brackets. Coloured grains pour through the narrow waist, where two tiny figures work with a small cart. The upper bulb holds a dark red sand, and the lower bulb has settled into a pastel landscape of rainbow strata with orange tulips growing from it. Blue mushrooms and yellow-green vines climb the frame. All around it turn huge clock faces and gear wheels with levers, dials and studded rings, and little people crawl over them, tending hands and cogs. Purple flowers and clusters of leaves grow in the gaps. The round dials in the corners make clear landmarks, and the hourglass guides the eye through the middle of the picture.
