A giant kaleidoscope lies diagonally across a hall of orange and blue tiles, its barrel wrapped in plum, teal and orange bands of swirling gold patterns, with a round eyepiece at one end. The lens at the other end shows a stained-glass mosaic of blue, pink and orange shards. Flowers and mushrooms grow on its rings. A wooden scaffold with ladders holds a worker next to the middle barrel, and a rope bridge crosses to the shelves behind. All around, people at grinding wheels cut and polish glass at benches, with bins of coloured shards, racks of glass sheets and shelves of books and tools. The mosaic lens and the patterned bands give the pieces two clear, different textures to follow across the hall.
