One huge lavender plant grows like a tree at the middle of the picture, its pink-purple trunk and roots spreading across the foreground and its leafy branches carrying tall flower spikes in purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow. Tiny workers climb ladders to cut the blooms, tie bundles to dry on a platform in the branches, and tend a copper still on a wooden ledge. Around it, rivers with small boats divide the ground into herb beds, plant rows, and drying yards where people hang bunches of lavender. Stone distilleries sit in the corners. Each bed and each colour of flower spike forms its own neat group, which divides the picture into pieces that are easy to place.
