A huge mandolin lies diagonally across a dye works, its orange scrolled headstock in the lower left and its round teal-and-coral body rising at the upper right. Eight strings run along a blue fretboard. Tiny workers tune the pegs, repair the bridge on the soundboard, and climb a ladder to a hatch in the rim. Yellow trumpet flowers and pink bellflowers grow from the sound hole. Around the instrument, plank walkways cross a tiled floor between wooden vats, drying racks hung with red, blue, and green skeins, weaving frames, wool bins, and long blue dye troughs. Bundles of dyed thread dangle from the neck. Every vat and rack keeps its own colour, so the pieces sort themselves by hue.
