A cartographer's study opens onto a harbour: through the window a tall ship rides at anchor past a red-striped lighthouse and a row of quayside houses. A large chart titled "The Seven Seas" covers the blue wall, marked with compass roses, sailing ships and lettering like Terra Nova and Mare Oceanus, with two smaller world maps beside it. A man in a waistcoat stands at a side desk inking a rolled chart. The heavy front table carries a fully rigged model ship with a red flag, brass compasses, an oil lamp, a globe on a stand, spread maps and a quill in an inkwell. Bookcases and stacked volumes crowd both sides, more scrolls in a rack, a second globe on the floor. Warm timber against map blue and sea blue keeps the crowded desk sorting itself.
