Monks at Work in a Medieval Scriptorium

Rows of hooded monks bend over slanted desks, quills in hand, copying pages of text by candlelight in a stone scriptorium. Nearby, others stretch fresh animal hides across wooden frames to prepare new parchment, while a boy naps at his desk. Shelves along the back wall hold hundreds of tightly rolled scrolls stacked in neat rows, and a monk in green and orange stripes climbs to reach the top shelf. Two wooden screw presses stand ready on the open floor, one watched over by a curious child.
