Mountain Inn Dining Room

Bundles of dried lavender, hops and herbs hang from the timber beams of a mountain inn, lit by a wagon-wheel chandelier and copper pots over the tables. Skiers and hikers in wool sweaters share bowls of soup, bread and wine by candlelight, with windows behind them opening onto snow-capped peaks and lit chalets. A stone fireplace blazes on the left beneath a mantel of painted mugs, knitted stockings, and a basket of firewood. A second fireplace and a stocked bar with wine glasses and beer taps fill the right side, backed by shelves of bottles. Vases of wildflowers, loaves of bread and sticker-covered suitcases sit at the foot of the tables. Patterned rugs cover the stone floor between the benches, under paintings of alpine peaks beside the curtained windows. Each table keeps its own cluster of guests and dishes, so the room reads as separate suppers around one shared fire.
