Painted Pebbles with Spiral Knots

Rounded, pebble-like shapes tile the frame edge to edge, each stone a different jewel color: teal, magenta, olive, mustard, plum, and deep blue. A thin black border separates every stone from its neighbors, and inside each one sits a symbol drawn in gold or copper outline, spirals, triskeles, knotwork, crosses, and swirling tribal marks that never repeat exactly the same way twice. Some stones carry a single bold spiral, others hold a symmetrical four-part design, and a few pack in tighter, more angular patterns like woven cord. The stones vary in size and shape, some nearly round, others long and irregular, fitting together like a cracked pavement with no straight grout lines.
