A spice merchant's shop under a painted sign reading The Spice Merchant's Atelier, est. 1873. Rows of labelled jars fill the shelves behind the counter — golden saffron, star anise, sumac blend, harvest curry, chilli flakes — repeating in bands across the wall. The counter below holds patterned bowls heaped with turmeric, paprika, dried petals and green cardamom, each with its own scoop, beside a set of brass scales and a notebook. Hessian sacks marked Fresh Spices and Bulk Harvest stand open on the floor with baskets of cinnamon quills, cloves and bay leaves in front of them. Dried chillies, garlic and herb bunches hang from the beams beside a woven rug and a lamp. The heaped bowls give a dozen separate colours, and the jar rows sort themselves by shelf.
