A cut tree stump seen from above fills the centre, its growth rings painted in bands of green, yellow, purple, coral, pink and blue around an amber core. A small golden-domed palace stands on the inner rings, and stone bridges cross the cracks between the bands. Thick teal roots spread outward like rivers, and orange and pink shelf mushrooms cling to the bark. A town fills the ground around the stump: windmills with water wheels, a round arena, a red-domed hall, church towers, timber houses and an arched market hall. Terraced orchards climb a slope at the lower right, and tiny townsfolk walk the lanes. The ring colours and the districts between the roots give every part of the picture its own look, so the pieces sort themselves by hue.
