Raking Salt Beside Flamingo Pools

Rows of shallow salt pans stretch toward a distant windmill and cluster of red-roofed houses, their waters tinted rust, teal and rose beneath a soft lavender sky. Four workers rake mounded white salt into cone-shaped piles along the dry pans on the right, their wooden rakes leaving neat furrows in the crystallized surface. On the left, a large flock of pink flamingos wades through the flooded pans, some bent to feed and others standing still in the shallow water. Distant hills and scattered palm trees mark the edge of the flats, and evening clouds streak the sky in shades of pink and purple. The checkerboard grid of pans keeps the pink flamingos and the white salt neatly divided down the middle of the frame.
