A great gyroscope hangs at the centre of a round, tiled chamber: three nested rings in copper, teal and violet, each carved with scrolls or leaves and studded with rivets, around a purple spinning disc on a golden axle. Workers stand on the rings and on scaffolds beside them. One tends the bearing at the hub, others climb ladders and cross small plank bridges. The ring of floor around it is a busy machine shop with benches of gears, shelves of brass parts, stacked discs, staircases and tiny spinning tops. At the base, a green-footed stand holds a little garden with people looking on. Because the three rings differ in colour and pattern, each one makes an easy path to follow through the jumble of workshop around it.
