Roman City Square and Market

A classical city seen from above, its marble temples and columned porticoes stepping back past domes, a bell tower and blue hills. Statues stand in niches and along the balustrades, and an arcaded aqueduct crosses the middle distance behind a terrace of cypresses. A market has spread across the cobbled square below: striped canopies in red, blue, yellow and orange shade stalls of fruit, grain jars, woven cloth and pottery, with handcarts, stacked barrels and baskets between them. Townspeople in white togas and coloured robes cross the flagstones, gather on the temple steps and cluster round a fountain that spills into a round basin at the centre of a walled garden of palms, cypress and flowering shrubs. A patterned mosaic is set into the pavement at the front corner. Terracotta roofs and pale stone split the view into two clear textures.
