Rug Weavers Inside A Yurt

Sunlight falls through a round skylight onto a felt-walled yurt where women weave patterned rugs on upright looms. Two women sit at a low table studying a rolled pattern scroll marked with woven symbols, while others kneel at looms threading red, teal and gold wool into geometric designs. Finished carpets in diamond motifs hang from the lattice walls and drape over the floor, and baskets overflow with tightly wound skeins of colored yarn. Spindles and unspun fleece lie scattered near a low round table, and more rolled patterns rest beside the weavers as reference. Drying yarn hangs from the ceiling beams in loose red, teal, purple and gold hanks. Each looped skein waiting in the baskets is already sorted into the single color it will become in the finished rug.
