Scholars At A Coastal Observatory

Towers of pale stone and copper rise along a rocky coastline, each one fitted with a giant instrument: a spinning color wheel, stacked glass hourglasses, or a long brass telescope angled toward the sea. Robed scholars in deep reds, purples, and greens gather at wooden tables spread with maps and charts, pointing out routes and measurements to one another. Spiral staircases wind between the towers and down toward a glittering ocean, while other figures climb toward balconies to look through their own telescopes at the horizon. Shelves of books, glass vials, and globes fill an alcove at one side. The sun sits low over the water, casting a warm glow across the cliffs. Every tower holds its own instrument and its own small task, all facing the same wide stretch of open sea.
