A hotel laundry in a stone-vaulted basement, its arched windows open to a courtyard where washing hangs on a line. Three cream washing machines with brass-rimmed doors stand along the left wall beneath a run of copper and coloured pipes, dials marked Soap Inlet, Spin and Water Temp. Folded linens stack in bands of colour on open shelving, and a drying rack on pulleys carries shirts and striped towels above the room. Bottles labelled Lavender Rinse, Starch and Bleach line the central table beside a tin of soap flakes, flat irons and scissors. Baskets of washing sit on the patterned tiled floor. At the right a maid in an apron folds a white sheet at a long table, more linen piled beside her. The stacked linens give a dozen clean colour bands to sort by.
