Touring A Historic Waterworks Chamber

Beneath a city street, a vaulted brick chamber houses the machinery that once moved a town's water supply. Sunlight slants through skylights in the bridge above, catching moss and lichen creeping down mossy columns and arched pillars. A great green pump, ringed with gears and pipework, dominates one side of the hall, its iron frame streaked with rust and patina. Turquoise pools fill sunken reservoirs below wooden and steel walkways, where inspectors in bowler hats compare notes and engineers in overalls check valves. Above, on a street-level bridge, workers in hard hats and a passing clerk look down over the railing at the scene below, while a family with small children peers into the water from a lower platform. Stone arches recede into shadow on every side, each framing another private corner of the works.
