Victorian Steam Pumping Station

A Victorian pumping station runs at full steam around one enormous iron engine. On the left, a stoker shovels coal into a furnace with glowing iron doors while a heap of black coal spills across the tiled floor and a dog trots past. The engine's great flywheel and beam dominate the center, its gears turning under a plume of white steam as a worker in a flat cap adjusts a valve beside it. Upstairs on an iron gallery, top-hatted gentlemen lean on a long lever while another studies bubbling flasks at a chemistry bench crowded with beakers and burners. Below, a workbench holds neatly hung tools, a man scrubs at a sink, and rows of brass valve wheels wait to be turned at the far right. Discarded boots, spilled water, and a coiled cat on a pipe fill the quieter corners, each patterned rug marking off its own patch of the checkerboard floor.
