Rain has turned a village fete into a battle against the mud, and every stallholder presses on anyway. Two teams in red and blue slickers heave a rope through a sunken bog where a fallen sign already lies half-submerged, while nearby a red tractor churns its wheels trying to reach dry ground. Under dripping canvas roofs, volunteers guard a towering cake, trays of biscuits, and a table piled with giant pumpkins and squash. Sheep and a pig doze in a straw-filled pen as a farmer forks fresh bedding beside them. A glass gazebo shelters a small string quartet from the downpour while spectators huddle close with umbrellas. Elsewhere, someone balances on a ladder to hang soggy bunting, a dog shakes off water beside two children in yellow raincoats, and a queue forms for hot drinks at a covered stand. Every soaked tent and puddled path still keeps its place on the trampled green.
